Move More! Health and Movement in the Workplace
4 dicembre 2024
As part of the lead-up to Milano Wellness City 2030, the Move More! event was held in December 2024 to promote increased physical activity in the workplace. Supported by companies, institutions, and foundations, the initiative showcased a wide range of best practices for turning the office into a space of well-being.
A recent study conducted in France estimates that people employed in the service sector spend 77% of their workday sitting, 18% standing, and only 5% in motion.*
It’s no coincidence that one of the legacy pillars of Paris 2024 and a top priority for the International Olympic Committee, is Move More – Workplaces, a call for more movement in professional environments.
Inspired by this principle, and within the framework of Milano Wellness City 2030, we organized, together with Assolombarda and Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026, the event Move More! Health and Movement in the Workplace. The initiative brought together institutions, companies, and professionals to promote active lifestyles within the work setting.
Workplaces have an extraordinary opportunity to become engines of change, fostering health and well-being among their employees and the wider communities they serve. Testimonies from organizations such as Intesa Sanpaolo, Saipem, Politecnico di Milano, SPS Italy, NTT Data, and Sanofi demonstrated how targeted actions can deliver tangible benefits, enhancing both individual and organizational well-being.
The event featured inspiring success stories and innovative initiatives that turned workplaces into wellness hubs: from sporting challenges and programs to encourage active commuting, to movement-promoting tools and platforms, active breaks, in-house gyms, sports events to boost engagement and team spirit, corporate wellness discounts, and prevention campaigns, all with a strong focus on physical, mental, relational, and emotional health.
Each organization shared its own unique experience, offering concrete and replicable examples of how to foster healthier and more active working environments.
The numbers are promising: the event was attended by around 50 organizations, collectively reaching over 370,000 people, not to mention the extended impact on their families and local communities. The goal now is for each of them to implement at least one wellness initiative, helping to scale best practices across even more workplaces, especially through collaboration with the WHP – Workplace Health Promotion network of ATS Milano.
Naturally, the event concluded with a clear call to action. The Fondazione Milano Cortina launched the Let’s Move challenge: an invitation to design and implement a concrete wellness project and to actively participate in the Olympic Day on June 23rd, the last Olympic Day before the Milan-Cortina Games, to promote a more active and mindful lifestyle.
